    Un diálogo entre los relatos «Ante la Ley» de Kafka y La leyenda del santo bebedor de Roth, dos relatos cuya datación casi coinciden literalmente con el periodo de entreguerras, propicia una comparación de interpretaciones en las que participan nombres tan eximios como Benjamin, Arendt, Mann, Scholem, Adorno, Steiner, Magris... En el contexto de los años veinte y treinta del siglo XX, estos y otros relatos de ambos autores plantean una pregunta por la justicia que en manos de autores como Hugo Bergmann, Frank Rosenzweig y Martin Buber dio pie a un replanteamiento del judaísmo centroeuropeo, hoy casi olvidado, y a una revisión de la crisis de la modernidad europea en su conjunto.

    A dialogue between Kafka’s “Before the Law” and Roth’s The Legend of the Holy Drinker, two stories that almost literally coincide with the entre–deux–guerres period, suggests a comparison of interpretations where authors such as Benjamin, Arendt, Mann, Scholem, Adorno, Steiner or Magris have taken part. In the context of the twenties and the thirties these and other stories by the same authors display a question about justice which in the hands of thinkers like Hugo Bergmann, Frank Rosenzweig, and Martin Buber triggered a rethinking of Central European Judaism, today almost forgotten, that nevertheless witnesses not only the crisis of Hebrew but also of European culture.
