Los falsos religiosos y el título del "Libro de los gatos"

    Desde mediados del siglo xix la crítica lleva dándole vueltas al enigmático título del Libro de los gatos, para el que se han postulado diversas teorías que van desde el error paleográfico a la interpretación alegórica del término, pasando por manuscritos deturpados, códices interpuestos o términos en hebreo, arameo o latín. En este artículo nos sumamos a la teoría expuesta en 1951 por María Rosa Lida de Malkiel, aportando nuevos ejemplos de la expresión «gatos religiosos» y argumentando que las objeciones de algunos críticos a la polisemia del término se deben a una visión reduccionista del problema que conviene matizar.

    Since the mid-nineteenth century critics have been trying to solve the mystery behind the title of the Libro de los gatos. To that end, they have postulated several theories that presume the title must either be interpreted allegorically or that it is the result of a paleographic blunder, a defective manuscript, or a word in Hebrew, Aramaic or Latin. This article offers support to the theory put forward by María Rosa Lida de Malkiel in 1951 by providing more occurrences of the phrase «gatos religiosos» and arguing that the objections of some critics to a polysemic interpretation of the term are based on a narrow view of the problem, which requires a more nuanced treatment.
