High-performance athletes with international projection are those who meet the technical requirements established by the National Sports Institute of Chile with the Chilean Olympic Committee and the respective national federation. These athletes during the development of their sports practice must face different stages and changes, each of which has a multiplicity of factors to consider. Objective: The objective of this research was to analyze the experience of preparation for voluntary sports retirement of active high-performance athletes from individual disciplines in Chile. Methods: The methodology used was qualitative, with a phenomenological projection; using the in-depth interview. The sample universe is 20 high-performance athletes from individual disciplines, belonging to the Chilean Olympic Committee (COCH), over 18 years of age and with a seniority of 2 years in high performance. Results: The results show the positive and negative emotions associated with projecting the transition process to retirement.
Athletes recognize that family responsibilities, support networks, job security, support from companies and institutions, among others, are the external factors that have the greatest influence when thinking about sports retirement. In addition, personal abilities and skills stand out, most of which are transversal in the sports community such as discipline, adaptability, perseverance, projection, and "a spirit of improvement".
