The aim of this paper is to analyze the spatial distribution of the municipal population in Spain based on the twelve censuses carried out in the period 1900–2011 and to relate it to the historical and economic events that have taken place during that period. To this purpose, the Spanish demographic centers of gravity are calculated using census data available since 1900 following the methodology proposed by the U.S. Census Bureau (1923), Barmore (1992) and Aboufadel and Austin (2006). The contribution of this paper to the literature on the subject is that, through the theoretical link with the preceding references, the trajectory of the centers of gravity projected on the map through ArCGIS allows us to explain the behavior of the Spanish peninsular population throughout this period and to understand to what degree the socio–economic events are the causes that motivated its shifting in three different trajectories: Southwest (1900–1950), Northeast (1950–1970) and Southeast (1970–2011).
