Entre la épica y la liturgia: traducción y asimilación en las Advent Lyrics del Códice de Exeter

    En las Advent Lyrics, antes conocidas como el poema Christ I atribuido a Cynewulf, del Códice de Exeter del siglo X (Biblioteca de la Catedral de Exeter, ms. 3501), la traducción de conceptos e imágenes de la liturgia latina al inglés antiguo puede percibirse claramente dentro de un procedimiento de asimilación métrica e inserción en las formas del discurso épico anglosajón. Junto con esta herencia poética vernácula, las imágenes de construcción y de luz a lo largo del texto están cargadas con significados de salvación, derivadas a su vez de la prosa y la poesía latinas medievales. Las invocaciones del poema otorgan al texto un carácter cristológico y mariológico. Varias invocaciones a la Virgen María son llamativamente similares a otras expresiones encontradas en contextos doctrinales y litúrgicos, como los antifonarios del siglo VIII al X. Ponderamos aquí algunas cuestiones de traducción surgidas de un trabajo colectivo sobre este poema anglosajón, aún inédito en castellano.

    In the Advent Lyrics, formerly known as the Christ I poem attributed to Cynewulf, from the 10th-century Exeter Book (Exeter Cathedral Library MS 3501), the translation of concepts and images from the Latin liturgy into Old English can be clearly perceived within a process of metrical assimilation and insertion into the forms of Anglo-Saxon epic discourse. Along with this vernacular poetic heritage, the images of construction and of light through the poem are loaded with meanings of salvation, derived in turn from Medieval Latin prose and poetry. Several invocations in the poem give the text its christological and mariological character. The invocations of the Virgin Mary are strikingly similar to other expressions found in doctrinal and liturgical contexts, such as the antiphonaries between the 8th and 10th centuries. We discuss here some translation issues emerged from a collective work about this Anglo-Saxon poem, still unpublished in Spanish.
