Resumen de De poca valor: Consideraciones sobre la reutilización de libros en la Corona de Aragón en la baja Edad Media

El análisis de los testimonios conservados, tanto documentales como literarios y artísticos, revela que, hasta la difusión efectiva de la imprenta en las primeras décadas del siglo XVI, el libro era considerado un producto caro y difícil de conseguir. Por este motivo, se desarrollaron diversas estrategias destinadas a garantizar su preservación y su transmisión. La documentación evidencia el cuidado en el traspaso de los libros, en especial, aquellos unidos al ejercicio de una actividad profesional. Así mismo, muestra cómo generaba un reciclaje de las colecciones, ya que, al desintegrarse, perdían su condición original para dar lugar a realidades muy distintas a las iniciales. Finalmente, este paso dejaba sus huellas en la morfología de los libros, que eran desprovistos de algunos de sus elementos constitutivos, sustituidos por otros más adecuados a las exigencias de sus nuevos dueños y de las renovadas funciones que deberían satisfacer.

The sources, both documentary and literary, reveal that books were considered rare and expensive objects during the Late Middle Ages. Therefore, several strategies aimed at guaranteeing their preservation and transmission were implemented. For this reason, notarial documents, such as wills, show the care put into the bequest of the books, especially when they were linked to professional activities, whereas auctions make it clear how this transfer could cause the disintegration and recycling of collections, since they lost their original condition giving rise to situations that usually differed from the initial ones. Finally, analysis of the books reveals that the new owners could alter their morphology by suppressing some of the traces left by the previous holders, in order to provide them with features considered more suitable to their own taste and to the functions that they had to fulfil.
