En este trabajo analizamos dos formas de la existencia humana en Canaima: la civilización en las ciudades de la Guayana venezolana y la comunidad indígena en la selva amazónica. En primer lugar, hacemos un cotejo de los dos recintos y las sociedades humanas en ellos. Después, a través de las figuras anti-civilización en la obra, analizamos la actitud del novelista ante la civilización moderna y la naturaleza. Por último, abordamos la posible conciliación entre la iniciativa del hombre y la fuerza de la naturaleza desde la imagen del hielo en la novela.

In this article two forms of human existence in Canaima are analyzed: the civilization of Guayana cities and the indigenous communities of the Amazon jungle. First of all, these two regions and the human societies living in them are compared. Then, through the anti-civilization characters in the novel, the novelist’s attitudes towards modern civilization and nature are examined. Finally, the possible reconciliation between the human initiative and the natural forces will be explored based on the ice image.
