    La expansión en el ultramar atlántico fue ocasión de un permanente contraste entre los datos aportados por la Autoridad, proviniese esta de los Antiguos o los intelectuales medievales, y la experiencia de los exploradores. Esta dialéctica es especialmente visible en los relatos de viajes. Su análisis permite certificar notables cambios en la percepción y aprehensión de la naturaleza y la población de las nuevas tierras. Nuestro trabajo aborda estos aspectos en el período comprendido entre mediados del siglo xiv y finales de la siguiente centuria; y en las regiones que van desde el sur del Atlas hasta el Golfo de Guinea, contando en ellas a los archipiélagos macaronésicos. No buscaremos la contraposición entre la cultura oficial y la práctica de los viajeros, lo que resultaría arduo e infructuoso, limitándonos al choque entre los elementos de la primera que realmente llegaban al común de la gente y la práctica de mercaderes y gente de mar.

    Atlantic overseas expansion brought about a marked disparity between the information provided by established authority, whether ancient or medieval, and the lived experience of explorers. Such tension is especially evident in travel accounts, which reveal considerable changes in the perception and understanding of both the nature and population of the new lands. This article considers these aspects from the mid-fourteenth century to the end of the fifteenth within the region stretching from the south of the Atlas Mountains to the Guinea Gulf, inclusive of the Macaronesian archipelagos. Rather than arduously attempting an exhaustive account of the clash between the official culture and the praxis of the travellers, the article confines itself to specifying instances of that clash where said official culture truly reached the common person and encountered the practical knowledge of merchants and seafarers.
