El objetivo de este trabajo fue analizar, en términos causales, lasrelaciones entre fecundidad, migración y las características ambientalesy productivas de las comunidades indígenas de la SierraMadre de Chiapas, México. Se contrastan poblaciones contiguascon distintos patrones de fecundidad y migración. Además de lascaracterísticas ambientales y productivas, se analizan algunos aspectosde la relación entre el Estado y las comunidades indígenas,y la caída de los precios internacionales del café en 2002,con los cambios recientes en los patrones migratorios. Tambiénse aportan datos que sugieren que el crecimiento poblacional y ladeforestación conducen a la migración definitiva. Se propone unahipótesis para explicar la coexistencia de tasas elevadas de fecundidady migración a partir de las características ambientales yproductivas de estas comunidades.

The purpose of this study was to analyze, in causal terms, therelationships among fertility, migration and the environmentaland productive characteristics of indigenous communities of theSierra Madre de Chiapas, México. Neighboring populations arecontrasted to distinct fertility and migration patterns. Besides,the environmental and productive characteristics, some aspectsof the relationship between the State and the indigenouscommunities, and the fall of international coffee prices in 2002are analyzed with recent changes in the migration patterns. Also,data implying that the population growth and deforestation leadsto the definitive migration is provided. A hypothesis is proposedto account for the co-existence of higher fertility and migrationrates from the environmental and productive characteristics ofthese communities.
