  • This chapter introduces the basic tools and techniques employed in neurolinguistics in order to be able to tackle the key issues discussed in the event-related potential and functional magnetic resonance imaging literature on Spanish morphology. One of the most long-standing debates in the neurolinguistics literature on morphological processing relates to the very existence of morphology and morphological representations, that is, whether the apparent morphological structure of words plays a role in processing, and if so, when. The morphology of the Spanish verb has also been used to contribute to the storage versus full decomposition debate, specifically cases of irregularity and stem allomorphy. The Spanish gender system has also led to important research on the distinction between morphologically versus lexically encoded gender. Whereas number is a morphological marking for a conceptual feature that signals quantity, gender is a feature associated with the stem that must be stored.
