    El presente trabajo discute la multiplicidad de variantes en la traducción al inglés del poema Walking Around (1933) de Pablo Neruda. Para ello se abordan las versiones de cuatro poetas estadounidenses: Robert Bly (1971), W.S. Merwin (1970), Ben Belitt (1974), y Forrest Gander (2004).

    Se parte de la premisa de Octavio Paz, que plantea que, al traducir, los poetas tienden a usar el poema original como punto de partida para construir un poema propio. Así, en lugar de intentar mostrar cuáles versiones son más fieles al original, se señalarán las distintas estrategias de que se sirvieron los poetas traductores para recrear el mismo poema mediante distintos niveles de apropiación poética.

    This paper discusses the multiplicity of variations as Neruda’s Walking Around was translated into English. To do so, versions by four American poet translators are compared: Robert Bly’s (1971), W.S. Merwin’s (1970), Ben Belitt’s (1974), and Forrest Gander’s (2004). The exercise is based on Octavio Paz’s assertion that states that, when they translate, poets are likely to use the original poem as a starting point to build a new poem of their own. Therefore, instead of pointing at the most faithful versions, the focus here is placed on the strategies of the poet translators as they recreated the same poem by means or various levels of poetic appropriation.
