Prevalence of sleep problems in a community sample of portuguese adults

    • Background: Sleep disorder, including insomnia and sleep deprivation, are a public health commonand medical problem. Sleep disorder has been associated with several risk factors and has serious consequences. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of sleep problems in a sample of adults from the centre region, Portugal.Participants and Methods: In a cross-sectional approach, we assessed 166 students (94 female gender), aged 19 to 92 years living in the centre region, Portugal. Data was collected using a self administeredquestionnaire. Insomnia was defined based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV criteria and we considered “insufficient” <7 hours / night sleep. Prevalences were expressedin proportions and compared by the chi-square test with 95% confidence intervals (CI).Results: Prevalence of insomnia symptoms was 93.3%. Prevalence of the symptoms difficulty initiating sleep, difficulty maintaining sleep, early morning awakening and difficulty getting back to sleep andnon-restorative sleep were 37.8%, 63.2%, 62.8%, and 49.4%, respectively.Average sleep time was 6:54±1:14 hours; the prevalence of insufficient sleep (< 7h) was 66.9%; 62.0%wake up tired and 75.5% feel sleepy during the day.Conclusions: There is high occurrence of sleep-related disorders in this sample. More than half of the sample does not sleep the recommended number of hours of sleep. Good sleep is considered important for quality of life. Poor sleep hygiene or other sleep problems are responsible for the appearanceof various diseases and comorbidities, with decreased quality of life.
