    La “eutanasia” es uno de los primeros y más debatidos temas en el campo de la bioética, y sigue siendo problemático hasta el día de hoy. Este artículo analiza el proceso político-legislativo para la despenalización de la eutanasia y el suicidio asistido en Portugal, caracterizándolo en sus dinámicas y estrategias, señalando sus opciones políticas y evaluando las cuestiones éticas involucradas.

    La reflexión es introducida con una breve nota histórica que destaca la especificidad del debate contemporáneo sobre la eutanasia, a raíz del avance de las biotecnologías y su creciente carácter invasivo de la integridad humana. Los siguientes apartados pretenden ilustrar cómo el debate legislativo aún en curso ha estado marcado por la ambigüedad terminológica y la imprecisión conceptual, que enturbia la reflexión clara y objetiva, honesta y coherente que se requiere. En este amplio contexto, también afectado por un enfoque de arriba hacia abajo que favorece la persecución de la agenda de los partidos políticos por encima de los intereses y expectativas de la población, los autores trazan el sinuoso camino hacia la despenalización y regulación de la Eutanasia y el Suicidio Asistido en Portugal

    “Euthanasia” is one of the first and most debated subjects in the field of bioethics, and remains problematic to this day. This paper follows the political-legislative process for the decriminalization of euthanasia and assisted suicide in Portugal, by characterizing it in its dynamics and strategies, pointing out its political options and assessing the ethical issues involved.

    The reflection is introduced by a brief historical note that highlights the specificity of the contemporary debate on euthanasia in the wake of the progress of biotechnologies and its growing invasive character of human integrity. The following sections aim to illustrate how the still ongoing legislative debate has been marked by terminological ambiguity and conceptual imprecision, which clouds the clear and objective, honest and coherent reflection that is required. In this broad context, also affected by a top-down approach favoring the pursuit of the political parties’ agenda over the interests and expectations of the population, the authors outline the winding path to the decriminalization and regulation of Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide in Portugal.
