    A fundação da Ordem de São Francisco surgiu em 1209. A partir de 1217, a expansão pelo mundo e a diversidade territorial levou ao desmembramento da Ordem, tendose assistido à reorganização administrativa com a criação formal de Províncias Territoriais.Assistiu-se, igualmente, à instituição de reformas, facetas diversificadas da primitiva regrageral. Da intensa missionação franciscana empreendida no século XVI, destaca-se a chegadaao Brasil de que resultariam as fundações das Províncias franciscanas independentes de SantoAntónio e da Imaculada Conceição. No entanto, o estabelecimento organizado e permanentedos frades franciscanos no Novo Mundo Brasileiro dá-se apenas a partir do ano de 1585

    The Order of San Francisco was founded in 1209. From 1217, the expansion aroundthe world and the territorial diversity would lead to the fragmentation of the Order; though,soon, happened the administrative reorganization, with a formal Territorial Provinces foundation, and also the establishment of reforms that manifested in divergent facets from the primitive rule. The intense Franciscan missionary activity, undertaken in the 16th century, standsout the arrival in Brazil of Minor Friars, that would provide the foundations of the St. Anthonyand the Immaculate Conception, independent Franciscan Provinces. However, the organizedand permanent establishment of Franciscan friars in the New Brazilian World would happenonly after the year of 1585.
