    Roberto I de Nápoles y su esposa Sancha de Mallorca, atraídos por la religiosidadfranciscana, fundaron tres complejos monásticos en la ciudad portuaria, entre los cuales seencontraba Santa Clara. En 1310 se inició la construcción de la iglesia y del convento de frailesmenores. En 1312 la reina autorizó su unión con el monasterio de las clarisas, para que losmonjes se ocupasen de la administración de los sacramentos y demás servicios espirituales alas religiosas. De este modo Santa Clara se convirtió en un convento doble. Durante los siglosXVII y XVIII el complejo franciscano “competía” en suntuosidad con el resto de iglesias dela ciudad, por ello se dotó de un rico patrimonio en el que no faltaron los tejidos y bordados,caracterizados por el realismo y la libertad creativa propia de su tiempo.

    King Robert of Naples and his wife Queen Sancha of Majorca, attracted by theFranciscan religiousness, founded three monastic complexes in the port city, among them wasSt. Clare. In 1310 started the construction of the church and the monastery of Friars Minor. In1312 the Queen authorized its union with the convent of the nuns of the Order of St. Clare, sothe monks could take care of the administration of the sacraments and other spiritual servicesto the nuns. Thus St. Clare turned into a monastery and a convent at the same time. During17th and 18th centuries the Franciscan complex “competed” in sumptuousness with the rest ofthe churches in the city, for this reason it was equipped with a wealthy heritage wherein therewas no lack of tissues and embroideries, characterized by the reality and creative freedomtypical of its time.
