Un paseo por la vida de san Francisco a través de la pintura barroca sevillana

    Con la Contrarreforma, a la sombra de las directrices del Concilio de Trento, surgeuna nueva iconografía de san Francisco, en parte distinta a la medieval y en parte actualizandotemas tratados en épocas anteriores de manera que se enriquece dicha iconografía en el barro-co. Desde el nacimiento a su muerte veremos treinta episodios biográficos, ejemplificados enalgunas obras maestras de la escuela de pintura sevillana y en otras de menor entidad. Artis-tas como Roelas, Zurbarán, Murillo, Herrera el Joven, Ruiz Soriano, Valdés Leal, DomingoMartínez, Juan de Dios Fernández... trataron esta temática franciscana. A los clásicos temasañadimos otros menos conocidos como La visión de la Iglesia tambaleante, la visión de lassillas, san Francisco detiene las flechas de la justicia, o se arroja a una zarza para evitartentaciones carnales, ofrece tres monedas de oro a Cristo o su bajada a rescatar almas delpurgatorio. Entre los milagros que hace tras su muerte sobresalen la resurrección de un obispoo el castigo de otro, enemigo de su orden y otros temas no aparecen en sus hagiografías, comosan Francisco y la Escala de los Ángeles. Por último trataremos brevemente programas ico-nográficos dominicos en el que se integra Francisco y otros relacionados con la defensa de laInmaculada Concepción de María.

    With the Counter Reformation, in the shadow of the directives of the Council ofTrent, there springs up a new iconography of Saint Francis, in part distinct from that of theMiddle Ages and in part bringing up to date themes dealt with in past periods in such a waythat this iconography is enriched in the Baroque age. From his birth to his death we shallsee thirty biographical episodes, exemplified in some masterworks of the Sevillian schoolof painting and in other works of lesser importance. Artists such as Roelas, Zurbarán, Mu-rillo, Herrera the Younger, Ruiz Soriano, Valdés Leal, Domingo Martinez and Juan de DiosFernández ...addressed these Franciscan themes. To the classic subjects we add others whichare less well known, such as the vision of the tottering Church, the vision of the chairs, SaintFrancis stopping the arrows of justice, throwing himself into a bramble to avoid temptationsof the flesh or offering three gold coins to Christ, or his descent to rescue souls from purga-tory. Among the miracles that he performs after his death, there stands out the resurrection ofa bishop or the punishment of another enemy of his order, and other subjects which do notappear in his hagiographies, like Saint Francis and the Ladder of Angels. Finally we shall dealbriefly with Dominican iconographical programmes in which Francis is included along withothers associated with the defence of the Immaculate Conception of Mary.
