O artigo apresenta um estudo sobre empoderamento de familiares de pessoas com síndrome de Down, membros de uma associação localizada em um município de médio porte do interior paulista. O objetivo foi analisar o conhecimento dos familiares sobre os direitos das pessoas com síndrome de Down e sua aplicabilidade no cotidiano. Participaram 14 pessoas, das quais 76% eram do gênero feminino e 24% do gênero masculino. Do total de participantes, 79% eram mães, 14% eram pais e 7% eram irmãs de pessoas com síndrome de Down. A intervenção foi realizada por meio de palestra sobre legislação educacional e direitos das pessoas com deficiência. Foi utilizado como instrumento um questionário semiestruturado, aplicado antes e após a intervenção. Os resultados apontaram que os pais puderam conhecer tais direitos com vistas à mobilização para assegurar a efetividade das políticas públicas de inclusão escolar.

The article presents a study on the empowerment of family members of Down's Syndrome, members of an association located in a medium-sized municipality in the interior of São Paulo. The objective was to analyze the familiar knowledge about the rights of people with Down syndrome and its applicability in daily life. 14 people participated, of which 76% were female and 24% were male. Of the total participants, 79% were mothers, 14% were parents and 7% were sisters of people with Down syndrome. The intervention was carried out through a lecture about educational legislation and the rights of people with disabilities, in which a semi-structured questionnaire was used as instrument before and after the intervention. The results showed that the parents could learn about these rights in order to mobilize to ensure the effectiveness of public policies for school inclusion.
