Nos primórdios do Franciscanismo, o lugar de pouso do frade se constituía no quelhes era ofertado, pelas comunidades, pela natureza. Concebia-se a arquitetura franciscanacom muitas restrições, e é aos poucos que ela entra em cena, através da demanda por espaçospródigos para receberem os muitos frades que aderiam à Ordem. Mesmo assim, no correr dosséculos, a arquitetura continua sendo matéria de polêmica, tanto nas províncias das partes aonorte e sul dos Alpes, em conflito com a ideia de pobreza e da negação das posses materiais.Quando os frades, nas suas missões itinerantes, chegam ao Novo Mundo, o que lhes aguar-dam? Como se dá a inserção naquelas vastidões selvagens, onde o povoado, a vila e a cidade,ensaiam ainda seus primeiros passos? Como lidam com os habitantes nativos, que, até onde seconhece hoje, naquela franja de mar, por razões diversas das dos frades, estavam também emfranca itinerância, desconhecendo cidades? Como se procede a concepção e construção dosconventos? Como se realizam enquanto arte da arquitetura? Serão apresentados resultados deestudos especialmente focados nas casas franciscanas históricas do Brasil, fundadas nos sécu-los XVI e XVII, analisando a poética de suas edificações e os processos de suas implantaçõesurbanas, tendo como fundo as matrizes europeias.

In the early stages of Franciscanism, the place where the friars came to rest depen-ded on what was offered to them either by communities or by nature. The design of Franciscanarchitecture was limited by many restrictions and it makes its appearance gradually, throughthe demand for spaces large enough to accommodate the many friars who joined the Order.Even so, with the passing of the centuries, architecture continues to be a contentious issue inthe provinces both to the north and to the south of the Alps, clashing with the idea of povertyand the rejection of material possessions. When the friars, on their itinerant missions, reachthe New World, what are their expectations? How does the process of settlement take place inthat vast wilderness, where the village, town and city are still taking their first tentative steps?What is the nature of their dealings with the native inhabitants in that coastal area, who, as faras is currently known, for reasons different from those of the friars, were also entirely itinerantand had no knowledge of cities? What approach is taken to the design and construction ofconvents? How is their building carried out in terms of the artistic quality of their architecture?We shall present the results of studies specifically focused on the historic Franciscan housesof Brazil, founded in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, analyzing the poetry of theirbuildings and the processes of their establishment in urban areas and setting them against thebackground of their European models.
