    “Después de Cristo, San Francisco”. Razón tenían los hijos del Poverello de Asísen gritarlo con entusiasmo hasta convertirlo en dicho popular. Sus acciones fueron claves ala hora de derivar hacia el sustrato popular la tendencia, cada vez más intensa desde el sigloXI, a racionalizar y antropologizar la creencia y la vivencia de los misterios capitales del Cris-tianismo. Con ello no sólo se recuperaba la dimensión más humana, cercana y sensible de laDivinidad, sino que el individuo reencontraba el camino para reconciliarse con la Naturalezade la que forma parte y con su propio cuerpo. En esta intervención reflexionamos sobre latrascendencia de la figura de Francisco en la Historia del Arte, analizando una serie de clavesiconográficas determinantes en la construcción de su imagen visual en distintos momentoshistóricos, haciendo al mundo “pensar en seráfico”.

    “After Christ, Saint Francis”. The sons of the “Poor man of Assisi” were right toshout these words out enthusiastically until they became a popular saying. His actions wereinstrumental when it came to bringing down to the popular level the tendency, which fromthe eleventh century had become increasingly intense, to rationalize and anthropologize thebelief in and experience of the principal mysteries of Christianity. Through this not only wasthe most human, accesible and sensitive dimension of the Divinity regained, but in additionthe individual rediscovered the way towards reconciliation with the Nature of which he formspart and with his own body. In this paper we reflect on the significance of the figure of Francisin Art History, analyzing a series of crucial iconographic key points in the construction of hisvisual image at various stages in history, making the world “think seraphically”.
