    Desde que en 2016 el Ejército de los Estados Unidos empezara el desarrollo del concepto operativo de las Operaciones en el Multidominio (MDO), este está siendo adoptado por la OTAN y por las Fuerzas Armadas de países occidentales, entre las que se encuentran las españolas.

    Las MDO guiarán la modernización y el desarrollo de capacidades, buscando derrotar múltiples desafíos en todos los dominios, incluyendo el espacio y el ciberespacio, de forma que se mantenga la coherencia en las operaciones. La sinergia, operando simultáneamente en los 5 dominios actuales, se antoja un problema de difícil solución.

    Entender el entorno operativo como un «continuo de dominios» reconocería al espectro electromagnético (EMS) como dominio y, siendo el nexo común a los anteriores, lo auparía por encima de ellos. La superioridad en el EMS debe alcanzarse y mantenerse, siendo condición indispensable para el planeamiento y ejecución de las MDO.

    In 2016, the US Army started the development of the Multi-Domain Operations (MDO) operational concept. Since then, it is being adopted by NATO and other western armed forces, including the Spanish MDO are to orient capability development and modernization processes in order to overcome multiple challenges throughout all domains, including cyberspace and space, while ensuring operational coherence. To attain synergy by operating simultaneously on 5 domains is a difficult problem to solve.

    Conceptualizing the operational environment as a continuum of domains would recognize the electromagnetic Spectrum (EMS) as an additional domain and, being the common link to the current five, it would put it before them. EMS superiority must be attained and maintained as a mandatory prerequisite for MDO planning and execution.

    In this context, the Electromagnetic Operations have emerged. Allowing to coordinate the efforts of all Joint Functions and activities that rely on the EMS to achieve their objectives, they can decisively contribute to solve the MDO’s operational problem.
