El alumbrado público por gas en Puerto Real (1887-1910)

    Durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX el sistema de alumbrado mediante gas se extendió por las principales ciudades andaluzas entre ellas la Villa de Puerto Real, la única menor de 10.000 habitantes.

    Sin embargo, esta expansión se realizó en paralelo y en competencia, especialmente durante los últimos años de ese siglo y los primeros del XX, con el desarrollo de la iluminación por electricidad.

    Las dificultades para la instalación del sistema de alumbrado público por gas, las relaciones entre la empresa concesionaria y el Ayuntamiento, y el paso de ser una industria gasística a proporcionar energía eléctrica, son el argumento de nuestro estudio.

    During the second half of the 19th century, the gas lighting system spread throughout the main Andalusian cities, including Villa de Puerto Real, the only one with less than 10,000 inhabitants.

    However, this expansion was carried out in parallel and in competition, especially during the last years of that century and the first years of the 20th, with the development of lighting by electricity.

    The difficulties involved the installation of the public lighting system by gas, the relations between the concessionaire company and the City Council, and the transition from being a gas industry to providing electricity, are the subject of our study
