    La Vista de Madrid por Michel-Ange Houasse constituye uno de los hitos principales en la representación de la ciudad, presentada por su aspecto de Poniente que resultaba el más impresionante y significativo por la presencia, en alto, del Alcázar Real y de otros edificios destacados. Al publicar aquí su dibujo preparatorio se analiza esa visión urbana con su realidad topográfica a través de un conjunto de fuentes visuales, se verifica la fiabilidad y precisión de cuanto describe, y se sitúa esta sutil imagen del poder en la secuencia de los “retratos” que, antes e inmediatamente después, se hicieron de esa cara, la más expresiva de Madrid como corte de la Monarquía de España.

    The View of Madrid by Michel-Ange Houasse constitutes a milestone in the representation of Madrid’s urban image. The city is seen from the west, the vantage point that offered the most impressive and meaningful view as it privileged the royal palace and other prominent buildings. This contribution cross-references Houasse’s work with other visual sources to reveal the topographical accuracy of the painting and its preparatory drawing. It also anchors the work in a succession of “urban portraits,” which made it one of the most distinguishable views of Madrid as the heart of the Iberian monarchy.
