    La pronunciada desigualdad entre las condiciones de vida en los países europeos y africanos, combinado con las políticas migratorias restrictivas implementadas en la frontera sur de la Unión Europea, provocan las migraciones marítimas irregulares a través de diversas rutas que parten de las costas africanas. En estas rutas desempeñan un papel importante algunas islas del Mediterráneo y del Atlántico. Las Islas Canarias, parte de la ruta atlántica del África occidental, están experimentando actualmente un nuevo episodio con gran afluencia de llegadas. El artículo analiza la inserción de las Islas Canarias en la gestión migratoria de la Unión Europea, identifica las causas de la intensificación de las llegadas y describe las dificultades en la acogida y el tránsito de las personas migrantes.

    The pronounced inequality between living conditions in European and African countries, combined restrictive migration policies implemented at the southern border of the European Union, cause irregular maritime migrations through various routes that depart from the African coasts. Some islands in the Mediterranean and Atlantic play an important role on these routes. The Canary Islands, part of the West African Atlantic route, are currently experiencing a new episode of large arrivals. The article analyzes the insertion of the Canary Islands in the migration management of the European Union at its southern border, identifies the causes of the intensification of arrivals and describes the difficulties in the reception and transit of migrants.
