    This text explores the presence, significance and meaning of alcohol in the last film by the Japanese filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu. Considered a filmic testament, The Taste of Sake stands both as a funerary monument where Ozu's thematic and formal keys are identified, and as a transcendental reflective exercise. From a selection of paradigmatic scenes and elements, the aim is to show how alcoholic beverages make the narrative change, separating and uniting its characters, or omitting information through strong ellipses. This dialectic between advance and retreat, dilation and moroseness, a cinematic transmutation of the effects of alcohol, leads to a con- fession by the director, who ends up merging with the film's protagonist. Ozu, in The Taste of Sake, summarises and merges his poetics of cinema with those of life.

    El presente texto explora la presencia, significación y sentido del alcohol en la última película del cineasta japonés Yasujiro Ozu. Considerada un testamento fílmico, El sabor del sake se erige a un tiempo como un monumento funerario donde se identifican las claves temáticas y formales de Ozu, y como un ejercicio reflexivo trascendental.

    A partir de una selección de escenas y elementos paradigmáticos, se pretende mostrar cómo las bebidas etílicas hacen carburar la narración, separando y uniendo a sus personajes, u omitiendo información mediante fuertes elipsis. Esta dialéctica entre el avance y el retroceso, la dilatación y la morosidad, transmutación cinematográfica de los efectos del alcohol, desemboca en una confesión por parte del director, quien termina por fundirse con el protagonista del filme. Ozu, en El sabor del sake, resume y funde así su poética de cine y de vida.
