Controversies over changing the name have arisen three times in the history of the Southern States Communication Association (SSCA). The trajectory of these changes, we argue, has been toward a wider, more inclusive professional identity for our field and for those who affiliate with it. This is the story of how the latest of these changes occurred, as we lived through and participated in the contentious events of 1988 during the SSCA convention in Memphis.
