La tarta geológica: la tabla del tiempo geológico en tus manos

    Si hay algo que diferencia a los profesionales de la Geología de otros científicos es nuestra percepción del tiempo. Si pensa- mos en un público general o en estudiantes de Primaria o ESO, no es fácil acercarlos a la larga historia de nuestro planeta, pues está marcada por tiempos muy largos, que poco tienen que ver con los rangos temporales que están acostumbrados a manejar. Además esa historia está escrita en un lenguaje no siempre comprensible, el lenguaje de las rocas. Este es el obje- tivo del taller “La tarta geológica”, acercar al público general al lenguaje y al tiempo marcado en las rocas. Para el taller se requieren los siguientes materiales: láminas de distintos colores de arcilla, plastilina o cualquier material similar, réplicas de fósiles, una bandeja y un cuchillo. En la bandeja se irán disponiendo una encima de otra las distintas capas de arcilla en las que se pueden insertar los fósiles correspondientes a distintos tiempos geológicos (s.l.). Así se irá explicando cómo se sedimentan unas capas sobre otras y el enterramiento de los fósiles. Se pueden elegir distintos rangos de tiempo geológicos o aprovechar para explicar las grandes extinciones. Es fácil visualizar que al igual que una tarta las capas de más abajo son las más antiguas y las de arriba las más modernas. Una vez colocadas todas las capas se puede cubrir todo con arcilla o plas- tilina de color verde (vegetación), para indicar que esas capas muchas veces no son visibles. Una vez terminada la tarta es el momento de cortarla e indicar que el papel que hace el cuchillo es el papel que hacen los ríos y la erosión, que así nos dejan ver los estratos y sus fósiles. Se pueden extraer distintos trozos de la tarta y distribuir para que localicen los distintos fósiles y el orden en que aparecen. Con esta experiencia es fácil trasladarlos a la tabla cronoestratigráfica y hacerles ver que, aunque de una forma muy simple, la han tenido en sus manos. Este taller puede considerarse el más básico; pueden diseñarse otros con plegamientos, fallas, discordancias, etc. Por otra parte, y en el caso de la arcilla, se puede dejar secar y explicar también el proceso de litificación.

    The understanding of geological time is easy for geologists, but not for a general audience or Primary or Secondary School students, who are not used to the long times of our planet’s history. In addition, this history is written in a language they don’t commonly understand, the language of rocks. The aim of this workshop is to bring geological time and rocks contained in it closer to students or to a general audience. The workshop requires the following material: colored clay or other plastic material, models of fossils, a tray, and a knife. The sedimentation of different sedimentary beds would be explained as the laminae of clay placed one over the other on the tray, in which models of different fossils can be inserted to explain the burial of fossils. It is possible to choose different ranges of geological time and also to explain extinctions. It is easy to visualize how similarly than in a cake the lower beds (laminae) are the oldest and the upper ones the youngest. Once all the beds/laminae are placed, all the cake will be coated by green clay (vegetation) showing that beds many times are not visible. Once the cake is finished it is the time to cut it and indicate that the knife is like a river, which allows us to see the strata. Pieces of the cake can be taken out and be handled to the audience/students, so they can see the strata and fossils, and reconstruct the order they were deposited. With this experience we pretend they can easily understand the chronostratigraphic timetable that, in a way, they have had in their hands in a simplified version. This workshop is the most basic one, but different ones with folds, faults or unconformities can be designed. In addition, in the case of the clay they can let it dry and then understand the lithification process
