Part of a special section on 19th-century sculpture. Knowledge of 19th-century Portuguese sculpture is inextricably linked with the name of José-Augusto Fraņca, the author of the leading general study of the period, A arte em Portugal no séclo XIX (1966). The exhibition of Portuguese art, which was held in Paris in 1987 and in Lisbon in 1988, revealing 19th-century Portuguese art to an unfamiliar public, was due to his initiative. He was also influential in establishing the first history of art department in Portugal at the new university in Lisbon. Although a thesis on 19th-century Portuguese sculpture has yet to be produced, a new interest in sculpture is discernible. A chronology of events since 1986 that indicate this change of spirit toward sculpture in Portugal concludes the article.
