Part of a special section on 19th-century sculpture. Since the 1980s, the policy toward national artistic heritage in Italy has included the restoration of collections of 19th-century sculpture among its priorities. For the most part this has involved plaster models found in the studio of the artist. After the setting up of the first galleries of plaster casts, numerous “minor” works seemed destined to be forgotten or dispersed. This lack of interest can be explained by the concentration on the leading artists and the absence of studies made on the rest. The acquisition in recent years of these studio collections by the state and by local collectives, and the creation of new plaster-cast galleries, acknowledges the merits of these works. It has also stimulated research into 19th-century sculpture. Leading galleries of plaster casts are discussed and a bibliography of 19th-century Italian sculpture is provided
