Resumen de Belgique

Jacques van Lennep

  • Part of a special section on 19th-century sculpture. The writer discusses the galleries, exhibitions, and publications central to the rediscovery of 19th-century sculpture in Belgium over the past decade or so. The Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp and Brussels have played a major role in this revival. In 1986, on the occasion of the publication of the third volume of the catalog of its collections—dedicated to the sculpture of the 19th and 20th centuries—the gallery in Antwerp presented a selection to the public. At the museum in Brussels, a gallery of sculpture of the 18th and 19th centuries was opened in 1992. Of the various exhibitions of 19th-century sculpture, “La sculpture belge au 19e siècle” in 1990 at the premises of the Générale de Banque in Brussels, was the most important. The leading publication on 19th-century Belgian sculpture is the two-volume catalog published for that exhibition.
