August Kiss' monumental Amazon (1837–1842), which adorns the entrance of the Altes Museum in Berlin, is considered one of the most significant works of sculpture of the period. In a sense it symbolizes a break with the classical tradition in the plastic arts. Not only does it combine an imposing motif with an daring, dynamic composition, but it also attests the new relationship between artist and client, innovative forms in representation and hitherto inconceivable means of reproduction. Some examples illustrate the considerable impact this bronze had in other countries until the early 20th century.
