    Entre los cultivos hortícolas, el tomate es considerado de gran importancia en la provincia de Santa Elena, zona en la cual, se ha dejado de sembrar en los últimos 8 años con la misma intensidad, debido entre otros, a los graves problemas de salinidad en los suelos, inclusive las fuentes de agua dulce, las cuales actualmente poseen alto contenido de sales que impiden el crecimiento y desarrollo normal de hortalizas. Indica que el ciclo de vida en la planta de tomate no es anual como normalmente se cree; es anual solamente debido a las condiciones climáticas; puede ser poli anual y de distinta duración, según la variedad. Hay, de hecho, tipos de notable vigor, que continuamente producen brotes axilares y otras (enanas, denominadas autos podados) que detienen su crecimiento y posterior desarrollo. Según el hábito de crecimiento, existen variedades de crecimiento determinadas e indeterminadas. Las plantas determinadas que permiten una mayor densidad de siembra y las variedades de crecimiento indeterminadas que producen mayor número de racimos y crecen indefinidamente (ALDANA A. 2004). A si mismo LORENTE H. (s.f.) indica que la planta determinada es de tipo arbustivo, de porte bajo, pequeño y de producción precoz, se caracteriza por la formación de las inflorescencias en el extremo del ápice. El tomate de tipo indeterminado crece hasta 2 metros de altura, o más, según el tutorado que se aplique.

It indicates that the life cycle in the tomato plant is not annual as it is normally believed; it is annual only due to weather conditions; It can be annual poly and of different duration, according to the variety. There are, in fact, types of remarkable vigor that continually produce axillary buds and others (dwarfs, called pruned autos) that stop their growth and further development. Depending on the growth habit, there are certain and indeterminate growth varieties. The determined plants that allow a higher planting density and the indeterminate growth varieties that produce more bunches and grow indefinitely (ALDANA A. 2004). Himself LORENTE H. (s.f.) indicates that the determined plant is of a shrub type, small, small and of early production, it is characterized by the formation of inflorescences at the end of the apex. The indeterminate type tomato grows up to 2 meters in height, or more, depending on the tutoring applied.
