Objective: to evaluate the prevalence of anterior open bite in a sample of Portuguese children aged 3 to 8 years and the association with pacifier sucking habit.
Material and methods: an observational descriptive study was performed in a private clinic in Ílhavo, Portugal, between Octo- ber 2020 and May 2021 that included children aged 3 to 8 years who had attended the pediatric dentistry treatment room. Informed consent was signed previously by the legal guardians or parents.
During the intraoral examination the type of occlusion in the verti- cal, transverse and sagittal planes was registered and intraoral pho- tographs were taken. In addition to the clinical data there was a survey that was directed at parents on the pacifier sucking history of the child, which included the type of pacifier used, the material and the shape of the pacifier nipple, frequency of use and the age the sucking habit stopped. The descriptive statistical analysis of the variables was made using statistical software R version 4.0.2.
The absolute frequencies and percentages were calculated, and for comparing variables Chi squared analysis was used. The difference between continuous variables was analyzed using Student’s t test or the Mann Whitney test.
Results: a total sample of 96 children was used, with an open bite prevalence of 39.6 %. It was observed that 73.7 % of the children with open bite used a pacifier with a silicone nipple and 81.6 % used an orthodontic one. Most of the children (63.2 %) used a pacifi- er only for sleeping, and 44.7 % stopped the habit after the age of 3 years.
Conclusions: the prevalence of anterior open bite in the sample of Portuguese children aged 3 to 8 years with a pacifier history was 39.6 %. The pacifier sucking habit frequency did not increase the prevalence of anterior open bite, and the type of pacifier did not influence the prevalence of anterior open bite in the sample studied.
A positive association was found between pacifier habit persistence as from the age of 3 years and the development of anterior open bite malocclusion
