El texto pretende ofrecer una mirada retrospectiva sobre la creación del Consejo Episcopal Latinoamericano, como un gran acierto histórico y eclesial fraguado lentamente en la mente y en la acción de los que denominamos «padres» de la teología y la pastoral latinoamericanas, ante las necesidades imperiosas de la región. Particularmente la mirada se centra en las intervenciones de Pío XII a lo largo de su pontificado, y sucesivamente en la continuidad creativa de sus sucesores, quienes, con una impronta propia, supieron dar continuidad a la visión profética del papa Pacelli, con miras al fortalecimiento y extensión de la Iglesia en América Latina.

This text aims to provide a retrospective view of the creation of the Bishops Council of Latin America (CELAM), as a great historical and ecclesial success, slowly conceived and developed in the mind and in the pastoral of the «fathers» of latinoamerican theology and pastoral, to answer to the compelling needs of the region. We focus on the interventions of Pope Pious XII through his Pontificate, as well as the creative continuity of his successors, who knew how to carry on with the Pope Pacelli’s prophetic vision towards the strengthening and expansion of the Latin American Church.
