Viviendo con diabetes tipo2: descubriendo los significados que la familia construye en torno a la enfermedad crónica

    El presente estudio tiene como objetivo describir la experiencia de tres familias con un integrante que vive con diabetes mellitus tipo 2, tanto en los significados que construyen ante la experiencia de enfermedad, así como en los cambios en la vida familiar que suponen un nuevo estilo de vida impuesto por la llegada de la diabetes.

    Se utilizó el diseño de Análisis Fenomenológico Interpretativo y mediante entrevistas en profundidad, se espera haber captado e interpretado la experiencia de las familias participantes. La muestra consideró a la persona que vive con diabetes y a los miembros de la familia que viven con él/ella, que tienen un vínculo cercano, y/o que tengan algún nivel de responsabilidad en el tratamiento de la enfermedad. La persona que posee la diabetes presenta adherencia al tratamiento actualmente y se encuentran en un ciclo vital de adultez o adultez mayor, con presencia o no de complicaciones médicas asociadas a la enfermedad.

    Se observa como en todas las familias participantes ocurren sentimientos de tristeza y ambivalencia frente al diagnóstico: hay negación, resignación, pero a la vez aceptación con respecto al presente y futuro con la enfermedad. El impacto que tiene el apoyo familiar percibido para una persona que vive con diabetes mellitus tipo 2 es primordial para cumplir con los cuidados que la enfermedad requiere.

    The main objetive of the present study is to describe the experience of families with a member living with diabetes mellitus type 2, revealing the meanings they construct while living the health-illness process, including their expectations towards the treatment and quality of life, and to describe the changes that occur within the family that’s facing the diagnosis and treatment of this chronic disease.

    An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) design was used and through semi-structured and in-depth interviews the experience of the participating families was captured. The sample included persons that lives with diabetes and members of the family that live with them who has a close relationship and/or have some level of responsibility in their treatment. Subjects who has diabetes currently in treatment,  that are in a life cycle of adulthood or senior adulthood, and with or without physical complications associated with the disease were included.

    In all the families observed ambivalent feelings appeared in reaction to the diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus type 2: denial, resignation, but at the same time hope towards the present and future of the diasease. The impact of family support perceived by a person living with type 2 diabetes mellitus is essential for acomplishing the required cares of the disease.
