Los mapuches, también llamados araucanos por los españoles en los tiempos de la llegada de los europeos a Chile,1 2 son un pueblo originario sudamericano que habita el sur de Chile y el suroeste de Argentina. De modo genérico, mapuches abarca a todos los grupos que hablan o hablaban la lengua mapuche o mapudungún, y de modo particular el término se refiere a los mapuches de La Araucanía y sus descendientes.
