Resumen de Bridging the Divide: The Current Status of Web 2.0 in Higher Education

Interest i n using Web 2.0 tools to complement or replace lear ning management systems (LMS) in higher education has exploded in the past decade. Higher education institutions require legally compliant warehouses to track student learning a nd store its artifacts, while stu dents prefer the e ngaging, collaborative, and personalized learning e nvironments offere d by Web 2.0. Social networking sites, blogs, wikis, a nd video streaming services e nable learning and collaboration in contexts u nreachable by lear ning ma nagement systems. Researchers have argued for various i ntegrations of Web 2.0 i n classrooms to bri dge the divide between institutional a nd student needs, but questio ns about the most desirable features for such an integration remain. Furthermore, while models predicting endorsement a nd use of Web 2.0 for e ducational purposes exist, the extent to which factors impacting choice have yet to be examined in depth. In this paper, we will discuss (a) recent research trends o n Web 2.0 integrations a nd predictive models in higher education; and (b) additional choice-making factors to consider in future models of endorsement and use of Web 2.0 for learning.
