Desde inicios de siglo, la universidad impulsa entre sus alumnos el estudio de lenguas extranjeras, sobre todo del inglés, como mecanismo para generar mayores capacidades profesionales entre sus egresados. Tomando como punto de partida esta orientación institucional, este artículo indaga las características de los alumnos de lenguas extranjeras y profundiza en sus razones de ingreso, así como en las imágenes que se forman con esos estudios. Los hallazgos apuntan que el estudio de idiomas está asociado al campo de conocimiento de los alumnos, así como a sus capitales culturales. La información que soporta la investigación proviene de bases de datos institucionales y entrevistas a profundidad a 25 estudiantes en la Universidad de Sonora, México.
Since the beginning of the century, the university has promoted among its students the study of foreign languages, especially English, as a me-chanism to generate greater professional skills among its graduates. Taking this institutional orientation as a starting point, this article investigates the characteristics of foreign language students and dee-pens their reasons for admission, as well as the images that are formed with these studies. The findings suggest that the study of languages is associated with the students’ field of knowledge, as well as their cultural capitals. The information that supports the research comes from institutional databases and interviews with 25 students at the Universidad de Sonora, Mexico.
