Resumen de De indios a ciudadanos: políticas indígenas, negociación y acomodo en Chile (1818-c. 1860)

Este artículo examina la relación entre la naciente república chilena y los antiguos indios o indígenas del período monárquico, a través del estudio de dos regiones: la provincia de Chiloé y la zona central chilena. En estos dos casos identificaremos: 1) los mecanismos legales y extralegales utilizados para ciudadanizar a los indios, y 2) la negociación y el acomodo desarrollados por aquellos indígenas en el nuevo contexto político, con el doble resultado de la ladinización y la práctica de una ciudadanía indígena.

This article examines the relation between the nascent Chilean republic and the former indios or indigenous from the monarchic period, through the study of two regions: the Chiloé province and the central zone of Chile. From the study of both cases, we will identify: 1) the legal and extralegal mechanisms used for the citizenization of the indios, and 2) the negotiation and adjustment developed by those indigenous in the new political context, with the double result of the ladinización and the practice of an indigenous citizenship.
