    En la segunda mitad del siglo XIX la exploración de la desconocida África negra estaba en todo su auge. En la zona del golfo de Guinea, las principales potencias europeas competían por hacerse con los mejores territorios. La convulsionada España del momento estaba ausente de esa carrera, manteniendo una mínima presencia naval en sus territorios de dicho golfo y sin haber ocupado la parte continental recibida de Portugal en 1778. Sin embargo, gracias al sobresaliente esfuerzo del explorador Manuel Iradier, España consiguió salvar lo que luego sería Río Muni, la parte continental de la Guinea española.

    In the second half of the 19th century the exploration of the unknown black Africa was at its peak. In the area of the Gulf of Guinea, the main European powers competed for the best territories. The convulsed Spain of the moment was absent from that race, maintaining a minimal naval presence in its territories of the Gulf of Guinea and without having occupied the continental part received from Portugal in 1778. However, thanks to the outstanding effort of the explorer Manuel Iradier, Spain managed to save what would later become Muni, the continental part of Spanish Guinea.
