Resumen de La enseñanza de la geografía: un desafío para América Latina

La fructífera combinación de esfuerzos entre el CEPEIGE y el IPGH dio lugar en el año 2012 a un memorable episodio: se cumplieron cuarenta versiones sucesivas del Curso Internacional de Geografía Aplicada que se realiza en la ciudad de Quito y congrega a representantes de distintos países de América. En esta ocasión, dicho curso —habitualmente reservado a cuestiones técnicas referidas a la ordenación territorial y la geografía aplicada— trató sobre cuestiones más cercanas a la teoría, la historia del pensamiento geográfico y la educación. La orientación de este ciclo debe considerarse como una señal: América Latina crece hacia nuevos horizontes políticos, económicos e institucionales y en este camino necesita consolidar sus estudios geográficos. Para alcanzar esta meta es necesario que se desarrolle la geo- grafía desde sus bases. Es por ello que resulta importante cubrir dos campos con criterio continental: el primero ahonda en el pensamiento teórico, como fundamento de la aplicación; el segundo discute la enseñanza de la geografía como forma de rescatar futuras mentalidades de la cantera que representan las nuevas generaciones. En esta presentación colectiva se incluyen resúmenes de los trabajos de investiga- ción que los becarios presentaron como instancia de graduación en el curso aludido, que se denominara “La educación y la investigación de la geografía frente a las nuevas tecnologías de manejo espacial”.

The fruitful combination of efforts between the CEPEIGE and the IPGH support has paved the way for a memorable event this year: the 40th consecutive meeting of the International Course of Applied Geography, attended by people from different countries of America, which took place in Quito. On this occasion, the course, which had usually been reserved for technical issues referred to territorial ordering and applied geography, dealt with issues closer to theory, to the history of geo- graphical thought and to education. The course orientation should be considered as a signal: Latin America is growing towards new political, economic and institution- al horizons and it needs to consolidate its geographical studies this way. To meet this goal it is necessary that geography be developed from its basis. For this reason, it becomes important to cover two fields with continental criteria: the first, deepens on theoretical thought as ground for its application; the second, discusses the teach- ing of geography as a way of rescuing the potential thinking from the new genera- tions. This collective presentation includes abstracts from the research work that the scholars presented in the course mentioned, titled “Education and investigation of Geography facing the new technologies for spatial management”.
