    El libro publicado en 2017 y escrito de manera colectiva: Políticas de Salud Mental y cambio social en América Latina aporta a un campo de investigación poco explorado y, lamentablemente, opacado por otras áreas de estudio crítico acerca de la realidad de América Latina. La historia de la salud pública y las directrices políticas con las que se han ido construyendo los Estados nacionales latinoamericanos es un campo poco explorado y de limitada resonancia en las discusiones académicas. Es poco el valor que se atribuye a la función de la medicina y de sus vertientes ideológicas “salud” y “salud mental” para la construcción de la realidad latinoamericana, y, si es que se reconoce algún valor a las investigaciones realizadas en esta materia, el eco que producen es restringido. Por ello el libro coordinado por Rafael Huertas y cuyo proyecto se inserta en el marco institucional y de intereses de la Red Iberoamericana de Historia de la Psiquiatría, aporta con variopintas lecturas al quehacer del campo “psi” en un momento convulso de la historia de América Latina y determinado por el surgimiento de perspectivas “críticas” en las décadas de los 60’, 70’ y 80’, frente a los años de tensiones políticas y económicas que enfrentaron a ciertas visiones sobre la función del Estado frente al mercado, la sociedad y el ejercicio de derechos civiles. Y en ese contexto, la organización de la “salud mental” como política pública recibió encargos de tipo cultural y perfiló el quehacer profesional al tenor de la maroma política.

    The book published in 2017 and written collectively: Mental Health Policies and Social Change in Latin America contributes to a field of research little explored and, unfortunately, overshadowed by other areas of critical study about the reality of Latin America. The history of public health and the political guidelines with which Latin American nation-states have been built is a field little explored and of limited resonance in academic discussions. Little value is attributed to the role of medicine and its ideological aspects "health" and "mental health" in the construction of the Latin American reality, and, if any value is recognized to the research carried out in this field, the echo they produce is restricted. Therefore, the book coordinated by Rafael Huertas and whose project is inserted in the institutional framework and interests of the Iberoamerican Network of History of Psychiatry, contributes with varied readings to the work of the "psi" field in a convulsive moment in the history of Latin America and determined by the emergence of "critical" perspectives in the 60's, 70's and 80's, facing the years of political and economic tensions that confronted certain visions on the role of the State against the market, society and the exercise of civil rights. And in this context, the organization of "mental health" as a public policy received cultural assignments and shaped the professional work to the tenor of the political pigeonhole.
