A partir del hallazgo en archivo de fotografías inéditas de Martín Gusinde, el presente artículo indaga en los primeros encuentros entre el investigador y un grupo de mujeres adultas que retrató, tras su primer arribo a la Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego y durante su breve estadía en la Misión de la Candelaria1 de Río Grande en 1919. ¿Qué nos enseñan aquellas fotografías acerca de dichos encuentros y los referentes fotografiados? El presente artículo explora en esa dirección el caso de estudio etnohistórico, e implementa una heurística metódica e informada, contrastando críticamente diversos fragmentos de evidencias entrelazadas provenientes del archivo, publicaciones y literatura especializada.
Based on the discovery in the archive of unpublished photographs by Martín Gusinde, this article reviews the first encounters between the researcher and a group of adult women he portrayed, after his first arrival on the Isla Grande of Tierra del Fuego and during his brief stay at the Candelaria Mission in the Río Grande in 1919. What do those photographs enlighten us about those encounters and the photographed referents? This article aims to explore the ethnohistorical case study and implements a methodical and informed heuristic, critically contrasting diverse fragments of interwoven evidence from the archive, publications, and specialized literature.
