En esta contribución se analiza correspondencia mantenida entre Bernardo O’Higgins y José de San Martín, con el propósito de esclarecer sobre sus preocupaciones y sentimientos experimentados desde sus respectivos exilios. Ambos debieron alejarse después de haber dirigido batallas que aseguraron la emancipación de sus patrias, hecho que los unió en una sincera amistad y se mantuvo en el infortunio del destierro.
El epistolario se convierte en una fuente esencial al momento de indagar sobre cuestiones referidas a sus percepciones sobre el exilio, sus intereses y estrategias en materia política, así como también nos permite reconocer sus inquietudes íntimas y cotidianas.
Al mismo tiempo su lecturas nos motivaron a recapacitar sobre la historia oficial, que transmitida en las aulas escolares plasmó una determinada representación de ellos y de su tiempo. De tal modo, con este estudio nos situamos en la línea contributiva desarrollada en los últimos años, tendiente a la humanización de los héroes patrios que las historias nacionales inmortalizaron en el bronce.

This contribution analyzes correspondence between Bernardo O’Higgins and José de San Martín, with the purpose of clarifying their concerns and feelings experienced from their respective exiles. Both had to move away after having led battles that ensured the emancipation of their homelands, a fact that united them in a sincere friendship and remained in the misfortune of exile.
The epistolary becomes an essential source when inquiring about issues as they concern us, referring to their perceptions of exile, their interests and strategies in political matters, as well as allowing us to recognize their intimate and daily concerns.
At the same time his readings motivated us to reconsider the official history, which transmitted in the school classrooms reflected a certain representation of them and their time. Thus, with this study we are located in the contributory line developed in recent years, tending to the humanization of the national heroes that national stories immortalized in bronze
