Resumen de Petrología y geoquímica de las rocas volcánicas de la isla de El Hierro (Islas Canarias)

  La isla de El Hierro es la isla más joven y occidental de las Islas Canarias. Su aparente escasa variabilidad petrológica y geo- química generó una menor “atracción” geológica para los científicos, ralentizando su estudio. Antes de la erupción submarina a finales de 2011 en el área de La Restinga, la investigación geológica en El Hierro fue intermitente, siendo el trabajo de Carracedo et al. (2001) el estudio más completo que sobre la geología de la isla y su inclusión en el contexto del Archipiélago Canario. El interés mediático y científico que suscitó la erupción de 2011, p. ej., con la controversia sobre el origen de los fragmentos rocosos flotantes de “restingolitas”, pusieron de manifiesto la necesidad de una mejor comprensión sobre la evo- lución petrológica y geoquímica de la isla. En este trabajo presentamos una visión general de las características petrológicas y geoquímicas del vulcanismo en El Hierro dentro del contexto más amplio del magmatismo en las Islas Canarias.

  The island of El Hierro is the youngest and western island of the Canary Islands. Its apparent scarce petrological and geo- chemical variability generated lower geological “attraction” for scientists, slowed down its study. Before the submarine eruption occurred at the end of 2011 in La Restinga area, the geological research at El Hierro was intermittent, being the work of Carracedo et al. (2001) the most complete study representing the greatest advance in the global understanding of the geology of the island and its inclusion in the context of the Canarian Archipelago. The scientific and media interest caused by the eruption of 2011, and the scientific controversy regarding the origin of the floating rock fragments of “restingolita”, highlighted the need for a better understanding on the petrological and geochemical evolution of the island. In this work, we present a comprehensive overview of the petrological and geochemical characteristics of the volcanism in El Hierro within the broader context of magmatism of the Canary Islands.
