Irrigation is beneficial in many ways, but it has also consequences on the hydrological behavior in water bodies receiving return flows. This study aims to quantify the effects of transformation in irrigated land over discharge, salinity and nitrate concentration in the Lerma Basin since 2003. The implementation of irrigation increased discharge in the Lerma Gully (3.8 L s -1 year-1 ), and slightly decreased its high natural salinity (-0.29 dS m-1 year-1 before the implementation and -0.07 dS m-1year-1 after the implementation). Nitrate concentration also increased (+7.8 mg L-1 year-1 ). However, the increasing trend observed after the irrigated system become established (+4.7 mg L-1 year-1 ) has reversed (-4.5 mg L 1 year-1) thanks to the farmers’ consciousness-raising on the need of optimizing fertilization practices.
