Resumen de Performance analysis in AndroidTM

Alejandro Acosta, Francisco Almeida

  • The advent of emergent SoCs and MPSocsopens a new era on the small mobile devices(Smartphones, Tablets, ...) in terms of computing capabilitiesand applications to be addressed. Currentlythese devices have multicore processors and GPUswhich provide high computational power. The efficientuse of such devices, including the parallel power,is still a challenge for general purpose programmers. In the last years Android has become the dominantplatform in the small mobile devices. In addition, ithas a large community of developers. For applicationdevelopment, Android provides two development kits,Software development kit (SDK) and Native DevelopmentKit (NDK). To exploit the high computationalcapabilities on current devices Android provides Renderscript,an API that allows the execution of parallelapplications and is designed to be used in applicationsthat require high computing power. In this paper weaddress the evaluation of the performance on thesetarget platforms. A set of benchmark applicationshas been implemented to evaluate two different devices.Sequential and parallel versions of the differentdevelopment kits are considered in the computationalexperience.
