Racionalismo y visión trágica en el "Edipo rey" de Sófocles

    El hilo principal de la trama de Edipo rey, de Sófocles, es la investigación promovida por Edipo, actual rey de Tebas, para encontrar al asesino del anterior rey, Layo. En ese proceso se confrontan dos concepciones de la verdad y del saber: la ligada a la nueva cultura racionalista, y la concepción oracular tradicional. El propósito general del artículo es mostrar que el proceso que lleva a Edipo al descubrimiento de la verdad le revela las limitaciones de la visión racional y la ineluctabilidad del lado trágico de la existencia humana. Se analiza el sentido en que la noción de culpa es atribuible a Edipo, y se argumenta que la visión trágica cuestiona la correspondencia entre virtud y felicidad.

    The main thread of Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex plot is the investigation carried out by Oedipus, current king of Thebes, to find the murderer of the former king, Laius. In this process, two conceptions of truth and knowledge are confronted: the one linked to the new rationalist culture and the traditional oracular conception. The overall purpose of the paper is to show that the process that lead Oedipus to the discovery of truth discloses the limitations of the rational view and the inevitability of the tragic side of human existence. The sense in which the notion of guilt is attributable to Oedipus is analyzed, and it is argued that the tragic vision calls into question the agreement between virtue and happiness.
