Resumen de Courtiers et marchands d’esclaves au Maroc sous la colonisation française

Rahal Boubrik

  • The present article tackles the issue of slaves in Morocco during the first two decades of the French protectorate. More particularly, it deals with the stakes, the methods, the actors and the new forms of trafficking during this period. The advent of French colonization in 1912 was the occasion for the abolition of the slave trade and slavery in general in Morocco. However, we noted that this practice continued with the complicity of the services of the protectorate. In tracing the policy of the French protectorate in Morocco, it became clear that France considered above all its political interests more than legal and moral principles concerning the abolition of slavery. Thus, the policy adopted by the Resident General was pragmatic, reflecting the discrepancy between discourse and practice. The maintaining of the slave trade and slavery certainly responded to religious considerations (the opposition of the sultan and the religious elite), but such maintaining also reflected the considerations of an opportunist colonial policy.
