  • Starting from the observation that a good number of recent publications on Islam oppose this religion to global notions, such as modernity, democracy, which leads to treating it as a total system, as an alternative to others, the author recalls certain challenges to the idea of a “total system” by contemporary researchers based on revisited historical data. The perspectives thus opened up on history makes it possible to put into perspective the visions that make the caliphate a sort of system or norm that is properly and indisputably 'Islamic.'
