  La alpargatería fue una actividad económica y comercial muy importante en el Cehegín de los siglos XVI al XX, hasta que decayó a principios de la segunda mitad de esta última centuria. Estaba íntimamente relacionada con una serie de trabajos, principales y complementarios, que comenzaban en el mismo bancal de la huerta donde se criaba el cáñamo, y acababan en el banco del alpargatero. En los 40 y 50 del siglo XX florecerán muchas industrias que se dedican a la alpargatería y que serán una ayuda fundamental para paliar la pobreza de los años de la Posguerra.

  The manufacture of espadrilles was a very important economic and commercial activity in what was the Cehegín of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, until its decline at the start of the second part of the last century. It was closely linked to a serves of principal and subsidiary professions, from the very fields where in the same fields where hemp plants were sown, and which ended up on the espadrille professional’s bench. In the forties and fifties in the twentieth century many craft industries with links to this form of shoemaking flourished, and proved to be crucial an important boost in alleviating the poverty of the post-civil war years.
